What are ventilation services?
Ventilation services cover everything that brings fresh air into your home and moves stale, humid, or polluted air out: whole-house fresh-air systems, energy- and heat-recovery ventilators (ERV and HRV), exhaust fans, and airflow balancing. We assess how your home breathes and design a system that keeps the air fresh without wasting energy.
Is HVAC and ventilation the same thing?
Not quite. The V in HVAC stands for ventilation, so it is one part of the whole. Heating and cooling condition the air you already have; ventilation exchanges it with fresh outdoor air. Modern tight homes often heat and cool well but under-ventilate, which is where dedicated ventilation comes in.
What are the four types of ventilation?
The four are natural (windows and passive vents), exhaust (fans that pull stale air out), supply (fans that push fresh air in), and balanced (equal supply and exhaust, often with an ERV or HRV that recovers energy from the outgoing air). Balanced recovery ventilation is usually the most efficient for our climate.
What are the signs of poor ventilation in a home?
Common signs are condensation on windows, stuffy or stale air, lingering cooking and bathroom odors, high indoor humidity, mold or mildew in corners and baths, and headaches or drowsiness that ease when you open a window. Newer, tightly sealed homes are especially prone to under-ventilation.
Can poor ventilation make you sick?
It can contribute. Without enough fresh air, pollutants, moisture, carbon dioxide, and VOCs build up indoors, which is linked to headaches, fatigue, worsened allergies and asthma, and mold growth. Good ventilation dilutes and removes those, which is why it is a core part of healthy indoor air.
How do I fix poor airflow in my home?
First we find the cause, which is often leaky or undersized ducts, blocked returns, a dirty filter, or simply not enough fresh-air exchange. The fix may be duct sealing and balancing, adding return air, or installing a fresh-air or ERV system. We diagnose before recommending, rather than guessing.
Does ventilation help with mold?
Yes. Mold needs moisture, and poor ventilation lets humidity build in bathrooms, kitchens, and tight rooms. Proper exhaust and whole-home ventilation carry that moisture out and keep humidity in the range where mold struggles to grow. It works alongside filtration and, where needed, UV at the coil.
Does ventilation help with viruses like COVID?
Increasing fresh-air exchange dilutes and removes airborne contaminants, including viruses, which is why public-health guidance emphasizes ventilation indoors. It is one layer, working with quality filtration that captures particles, rather than a standalone cure. We can design a setup that raises fresh-air turnover efficiently.
What is the most effective ventilation system for a home?
For our climate, a balanced system with an energy-recovery ventilator (ERV) is usually the most effective, because it brings in fresh air while recovering heat and moisture from the outgoing air, so you ventilate without throwing away the energy you paid to condition. The right choice depends on your home, which we assess first.
What is the difference between an ERV and an HRV?
Both are balanced recovery ventilators that swap stale indoor air for fresh outdoor air while capturing energy from the air being exhausted. An HRV transfers heat only; an ERV transfers heat and moisture, which helps manage humidity. In most California homes an ERV is the common pick, and we help you choose.
How much does a ventilation system cost?
It depends on the type, from a single exhaust fan to a whole-home ERV with ducting, and on your home’s layout and access. We price it per project and give you a written quote after assessing the home, rather than a one-size number. We will also flag any utility rebates you may qualify for.
How much does it cost to put ventilation in a house?
Adding whole-home ventilation to an existing house is priced by the system type, the ducting required, and access, so it varies widely. A simple fresh-air intake is modest; a fully ducted ERV is more involved. We assess your home and quote it in writing before any work.
How often should a ventilation system be serviced?
Once a year is a good rhythm: filters cleaned or replaced, the recovery core checked and cleaned, fans and controls tested, and airflow verified. ERVs and HRVs in particular rely on clean filters and cores to perform, so annual service keeps them efficient. We can fold it into a maintenance visit.
What is the life expectancy of a ventilation system?
A well-maintained ventilation system, including an ERV or HRV, typically lasts around 15 to 20 years, with fans and cores serviceable along the way. Keeping the filters and core clean is the biggest factor in reaching the top of that range.
Are home ventilation systems worth it?
For tight, newer homes and anyone dealing with stuffy air, humidity, odors, or allergies, yes, they make a clear difference in comfort and air quality, and a recovery ventilator does it without a big energy penalty. For a leaky older home that already exchanges plenty of air, the case is weaker. We give you the honest assessment.
