Good, Better, or Best: Which Tier Fits You?

A new system isn't one price, it's a choice between upfront cost and long-term running cost. Tap a tier to see what you get and who it suits. We size and quote your exact system after seeing your home.

Better tier
~16–17 SEER2 / 96% AFUE high-efficiency

A high-efficiency, often two-stage system, or a heat pump, that noticeably lowers running costs and evens out comfort. For most Sacramento homes this is the sweet spot between price and payback.

Two-stage or heat-pump options
Lower monthly running costs
Often qualifies for utility rebates
Best for: Most homeowners staying 5+ years who want lower bills.

● Common Questions

HVAC Installation FAQ

Cost, timing, sizing, SEER2 and refrigerant rules, rebates, and choosing equipment.

How much does a new HVAC system cost in Sacramento?
It depends on the equipment and your home, but a typical full furnace or AC replacement for a 2,000 square foot Sacramento home generally runs in the several-thousand-dollar range installed, with high-efficiency and variable-speed systems reaching higher. We size the system to your home with a load calculation, then give you a written flat-rate quote before any work, so the number is exact and yours to approve.
How long does an HVAC installation take?
A straightforward like-for-like replacement is usually a one-day job. Adding or reworking ductwork, changing fuel or system type, or a whole-home multi-zone install can take two days or more. We give you the timeline up front and keep the work area clean and protected throughout.
Why does correct sizing matter so much?
An oversized system short-cycles, leaves your home humid, and wears out faster; an undersized one runs constantly and never catches up on a hot day. We run a load calculation based on your square footage, insulation, windows, and orientation rather than just matching the old box, so the new system is sized right for real comfort and efficiency.
What SEER2 rating do I need in California?
California is in the DOE Southwest region, so a new split-system air conditioner under 45,000 BTU must meet a minimum of 14.3 SEER2, and split heat pumps must meet at least 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. Higher-efficiency systems go well above the minimum. We help you weigh the efficiency tier against the payback in Sacramento’s climate.
What refrigerant do new systems use in 2026?
Since January 2025, new residential AC and heat pump systems use low-GWP A2L refrigerants, mainly R-454B for ducted systems and R-32 for ductless mini-splits, replacing R-410A. Our technicians are trained and equipped for A2L installation. You cannot retrofit an old R-410A system to A2L, so this only applies to new equipment.
Are there rebates or tax credits for a new system?
The federal 25C energy-efficiency tax credit expired December 31, 2025, so there is no federal HVAC credit in 2026. However, California utility and state programs such as SMUD, PG&E, and TECH Clean California often offer rebates, especially for heat pumps. We help you identify current programs you may qualify for, but always verify the exact amount with the provider.
Should I replace my furnace and AC at the same time?
Often yes, if both are aging. Matched systems run more efficiently together, you pay one installation labor charge instead of two, and a new AC paired with an old furnace coil can underperform. If only one has failed and the other is young and healthy, we will tell you so rather than upsell you a full system you do not need.
Do you offer financing on new installations?
Financing options are available for qualifying installations so a new system fits your budget. We will walk you through the current options and monthly figures alongside your written quote. Ask us for the specifics when we scope your project.
Is a heat pump a good choice for a Sacramento install?
For many Sacramento homes, yes. The mild foothill winters suit a heat pump well, it heats and cools with one efficient system, and it is the equipment most utility rebate programs favor. A gas furnace still makes sense in some homes depending on your rates and setup. We compare both honestly during the estimate.
What is included in HVAC installation?
A full install includes a load calculation to size the system, removal and disposal of the old equipment, the new unit and coil, any needed refrigerant lines and electrical or duct work, a new thermostat if needed, permits and inspection, and a commissioning test. We register your warranty and walk you through the system before we leave.
How much is HVAC for a 4,000 sq ft house?
A larger home needs more capacity, and often zoning or a second system, so a 4,000 square foot install runs meaningfully higher than a 2,000 square foot one. Rather than guess from square footage alone, we run a load calculation and give you an exact written quote.
Why is HVAC installation so expensive?
The price covers the equipment itself, skilled licensed labor, permits and code compliance, refrigerant that is pricier since the R-410A phase-out, and any duct or electrical work. A right-sized, properly installed system also lasts longer and costs less to run, so a cheap install often costs more over time.
How do I prepare for HVAC installation?
Clear a path to the indoor and outdoor units, move fragile items nearby, and secure pets. Plan for the power to be off briefly and for some noise during the day. We lay down floor protection and clean up fully, so there is little else you need to do.
What are the basic components of an HVAC system?
The core parts are the heat source (furnace or heat pump), the cooling side (compressor and condenser), the air handler and blower that move air, and the ductwork and thermostat that distribute and control it. A filter and, on gas systems, a heat exchanger round it out.
What are the three types of HVAC?
The common residential setups are a split system (indoor furnace or air handler plus an outdoor unit), a packaged system (everything in one outdoor cabinet), and a ductless mini-split. A heat pump can serve as the split or ductless type. We recommend the right fit for your home.
Is installing a new HVAC worth it, and what are the downsides?
A new, right-sized system lowers running costs, improves comfort, and ends the cycle of repairs on aging equipment, so it usually pays off over its 15-plus-year life. The main downsides are the upfront cost and a day or two of installation, which financing and utility rebates help offset.
How long does HVAC last after installation?
A well-installed, well-maintained system lasts about 15 to 20 years, with heat pumps nearer 10 to 15 because they run year-round. Correct sizing, a clean install, and annual maintenance are what get you to the top of that range.
What must be considered for each HVAC installation?
Every install starts with a load calculation, then we weigh your ductwork condition, insulation and windows, fuel type and utility rates, efficiency goals and budget, and any rebates you qualify for. Getting these right up front is what separates a system that just runs from one that runs efficiently for years.
