What is a commercial heat pump?
A commercial heat pump is an electric HVAC system that both heats and cools a business or industrial building by moving heat rather than burning fuel. It comes as rooftop packaged, split, or VRF equipment, sized to the building’s load, and reverses to heat in winter and cool in summer. One efficient system covers both seasons instead of a separate furnace and AC.
How do commercial heat pumps work?
A heat pump moves heat instead of creating it: in summer it pulls heat out of the building to cool, and in winter a reversing valve flips the cycle to pull heat from the outside air and bring it in. Because it moves heat, it delivers several units of heating or cooling per unit of electricity. That efficiency is why heat pumps suit a mild climate like Sacramento’s so well.
How much do commercial heat pumps cost?
It depends on capacity in tons, the system type, whether rooftop, split, or VRF, and the efficiency and controls, so we quote per project after a load calculation. How long do commercial heat pumps last?
A well-maintained commercial heat pump typically lasts 12 to 20 years. What is the most common problem with commercial heat pumps?

What is the 20 degree rule for heat pumps?
The 20-degree rule is a guideline that a heat pump starts leaning on its backup electric heat once the outdoor temperature drops roughly 20 degrees below your indoor setpoint, into the 30s. It also means you shouldn’t set the thermostat back more than a couple of degrees, because recovering a big setback triggers that expensive auxiliary heat. Steady setpoints keep a heat pump efficient.
How much harder is commercial HVAC than residential?
Commercial HVAC is considerably more involved: larger equipment, three-phase power, rooftop access and rigging, zoning and building controls, and stricter code and permitting. It takes commercial-trained technicians and different parts. That’s why you want a contractor set up for commercial work, not just a residential crew on a bigger unit.
What are the downsides of commercial heat pumps?
The main trade-offs are a higher up-front cost than a basic single-purpose unit, reduced efficiency in extreme cold that may call for backup heat, and, because they run in both seasons, a need for twice-yearly maintenance.
